Terms of use and subscription

Version 2026-10-11. These terms include the information required by section 43 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, 2002 (ECTA). Please read them, and save or print a copy if you want one (in your browser, use Share or Print).

1. Who you are dealing with

2. The service

SpensSlim is a web app for keeping track of the food in your home pantry. You scan barcodes or tap + / − to record what goes in and out. It keeps a shopping list of items that are running low and a history of who took what, and it suggests recipes from a built-in catalogue based on what you have. Everyone in your home shares one pantry by logging in with your cellphone number and PIN. It works in a web browser on a phone or computer, needs an internet connection, and can be added to your home screen. The service starts as soon as you sign up.

Recipes come from the Wikibooks Cookbook under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence. They are written by volunteers and provided as they are. Always check ingredients for allergies, and check food safety and cooking times yourself. SpensSlim does not track expiry dates.

3. Free trial

New pantries are free for 14 days. We do not ask for bank or card details, and nothing is charged automatically. When the trial ends, your pantry becomes read-only: you can still see it and download your data, but you cannot change it until you pay. If you decide not to continue, you do not need to do anything.

4. Price and payment

5. Cooling-off, cancelling and refunds

6. Your account

7. Availability and responsibility

We work to keep SpensSlim running and backed up, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of mistakes (for example, a wrong product name from a barcode lookup, or a recipe match that is wrong). SpensSlim is a helper: decisions about what to buy, cook and eat are yours. As far as the law allows, our total responsibility to you is limited to what you paid in the last 12 months. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under the Consumer Protection Act, or our responsibility for gross negligence.

8. Ending the service

We may pause a pantry that has not been paid for. If we ever stop offering SpensSlim, we will give you at least 30 days' notice in the app, let you download your data, and refund any unused full months.

9. Your records

You can open these terms at any time at spensslim.co.za/terms. Your plan status and paid-until date are shown in the app. You can download all your data at any time, and we keep payment records for 5 years. Ian confirms each payment by WhatsApp or email, so you have your own record.

10. Privacy and security

How we handle your personal information is explained in the Privacy Notice. Payments are made from your own bank by EFT, so we never see card or banking passwords.

11. Complaints

Please contact Ian first; we aim to reply within 2 business days. If we cannot resolve it, you may contact the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud or the National Consumer Commission. For privacy complaints, see the Privacy Notice.

12. Law

These terms are governed by the law of South Africa. If we change them, we will show the new version in the app before it applies to your next payment.

13. Ownership of SpensSlim

The SpensSlim app, its name, design, screens and computer code are © 2026 Ian Frost, all rights reserved, and are protected by the Copyright Act, 1978. Your subscription lets you use the app for your own household. You may not copy, reverse-engineer, resell or republish the app or its code, or build a copy of it, without written permission. Content owned by others keeps its own licence: the recipes are from the Wikibooks Cookbook (CC BY-SA 4.0), and product names and pictures come from Open Food Facts (Open Database Licence). Your pantry data belongs to you.
